South Tenerife is one of the island's most popular surf zones: a huge variety of waves along the coast, for beginners and seasoned surfers alike. Below is our working map, zone by zone — the same one we use every day to take you where the waves are good today.
The surf epicentre of southern Tenerife. Here surfing is part of the identity of the place: schools, surf shops, bars, an international crowd and waves for every level. Several important peaks sit within it.
Las Américas · next to the pier
A spot right by the pier, in front of the San Borondón restaurant. It works mainly in summer with a south, south-west or south-east swell. Rarely too crowded.
Playa de Las Américas
A less crowded wave, best suited to advanced surfers. A long right that demands good wave reading and a quick exit off the peak. It fires in winter but can also work in summer.
Playa de Las Américas
A winter wave, very local and strictly for high-level surfers. It breaks straight onto the rocks and the current can be strong.

A good spot to start surfing, especially on small days. When the swell picks up, it gets considerably more demanding.

Playa de Las Américas
One of the most popular spots in Playa de Las Américas, and where a lot of surf lessons take place. The bay has a fairly even rocky bottom, with a mellower area for beginners and more technical peaks for advanced surfers.
Playa de Las Américas
A legendary, well-known wave: powerful and technical. For experienced surfers only, and heavily respected by the locals.
Beyond Las Américas, the south coast has a spot for every condition: from sheltered back-up options to the wind kingdom of El Médano.
South-east · near El Médano
A very local spot. Access and reading the line-up are not always straightforward. It can deliver good waves far from the crowd.
East coast · Granadilla
Best known for windsurfing and kitesurfing thanks to the steady wind, but under the right conditions it also serves up interesting waves. It includes areas such as La Machacona, La Tejita and El Cabezo.
Next to the Montaña Roja
Set in a protected natural landscape beside the Montaña Roja. Waves over a sandy bottom and a far wilder setting.
Western side of the south coast
On the western side of southern Tenerife, with quality waves and fewer people. Some of the spots here are very local and very technical.
